Bridge to the Core: Capricorn 2005

Bridge to the Core was the 2005 annual edition of Planet Waves. Written in Paris, France, the theme was Pluto conjunct the Galactic Core. Here is the Capricorn horoscope from that edition. The full website is located here.

WHEN WE ARE BORN the first time, we tend to come out all in one piece. You have been reborn, but you’ve emerged from this process one mysterious, excruciating bit at a time. And, as though reassembled with the power of Isis, you are now, once again, a whole person. Or rather, most of the job is done.

There may seem to be that one last part that is not quite present and accounted for…or one last seam to glue together, sand down and finish. While in the immediate sense this is true — that is, one significant portion of your current rebirthing is still to come — the job is never truly done. Which if you ask me should not concern you at all. More to the point, you need to take some time and reflect on what you’ve accomplished.

I assure you: it is more than you think. You have passed through so many layers of yourself, so many different kinds of feelings, conflicts and contradictions, and through each part of this journey, you’ve slowly found some peace of mind, and a sense of purpose in the world. That sense of purpose is no small price for you; and while it’s not exactly a towering oak tree at the moment, it is alive within you and will respond to nurturing and attention.

The difficult part of the past year or more has been how challenging it’s been to really engage with people in relationships. The emotional aspect has been particularly challenging, which has not been assisted by your own inner process that has stirred up so much in the way of mixed feelings about yourself. So to say relating has been difficult is a little like saying it’s hard to play volleyball while a sprained ankle heals. If you have experience in isolation, it’s been for two purposes. One has been to give you space you could exist in apart from the world, even if that was psychic or mental space rather than physical space. The other has been to compel you to find a new way of relating to people — an entirely new way you’d never considered before.

The feeling in your charts is like you’ve burrowed underground to reach the part of someone that is most familiar to you, almost as if you were seeking that one long lost part of yourself. To a great degree, you’ve succeeded, and now what you need to do is keep working that pathway until it becomes the most — indeed, the only — familiar avenue through which you relate. This is your way of leaving the past behind you. You have made your own way and discovered a new route; one that is more direct, and which allows people access to who you are without all the trappings and obstacles of the past.

The challenge of Chiron leaving your sign in February, making a brief return and then staying in Aquarius through 2011, is about taking what you’ve learned and turning it into patterns. Aquarius is the sign of patterns, and Chiron’s presence there will represent many efforts by many people to encode new patterns in their lives, relationships and in the world. For you, this involves taking what you’ve learned about yourself and making sure it becomes more than a temporary adjustment or a good theory — but rather, a way of life.

The French word for self-esteem is auto-esteem, which I think is a little clearer. That’s a little like saying your self-esteem has to run itself and not be driven by foot power. Capricorns, for all their might, power and ambition, can woefully underestimate their role in the world and how people feel about them.

Along these lines, it is significant that Saturn, your ruling planet, changes signs this year. That Saturn will leave Cancer, your opposite sign, is likely to come as a relief, if for no other reason than that the next transit is neither so direct nor so urgent as a planet in your 7th solar house. But it is, in a sense, a much deeper transit, taking you further into shared or mutual territory than you’ve ever been before. With Saturn in your 8th house, self-esteem is not a theory; rather, it is something you have to put into practice all the time.

It can be a difficult transit because you may feel like you’re having to put yourself on the auction block all the time. You may feel like you’re selling yourself. I would recommend, to the extent that may be true, that you charge a high price. But I would also remind you of some words of wisdom from my old editor Joel Whitaker, who would frequently say you can’t buy a congressman, but you can definitely rent one. In other words, you’re not really for sale, you’re just selling your services, ideas, or labor. To do this, you need clear boundaries, and good contracts.

And you need to do the ultimate Saturn in Leo thing, which is to turn lead into gold. You may wonder why someone should pay you $1,000 for as many words, when you type that in an email for free every day. The reason is because you’re worth it, and the purpose of this transit is to teach you that you are, in fact, worth it. Fortunately, it doesn’t arrive until July, so you have some time to practice. Also, it lasts a while, through fall of 2007. And it helps a lot that later in the year, Chiron newly in Aquarius, your 2nd house, meets up with Saturn in Leo in the next exact opposition of a long series (see chart in resources guide).

This tells me that far from being left high and dry, you’re going to have help, mentoring, communication and find yourself in possession of some clear ideas you need to help you go forward in this new and vital stage of your life. As I have written before, I think that Saturn in the 8th house has a worse reputation than it deserves. It is not, in my experience, a time of scarcity, but rather a time of learning how to enlist others in getting your needs met, and how to be open to the realty of that happening.

In personal relationships, this transit is a study in boundaries. Keep issues with money and sex clear and you’ll accomplish a lot. Everything, everything, everything needs to be negotiated. You need to understand, viscerally and in your body, that when you exchange money or sex, you are exchanging energy. Both are forms of energy, but data is exchanged with energy. Therefore, you cannot be too conscientious. Everything needs to be arranged in advance, in detail, and agreed to in word and in spirit. In the end, though it may be a bit arduous, this will save your friendships and protect your relationships.

We could sum it all up this way: Even as you’ve noticed that the work of living was becoming a little less intense, the reality of your success began to dawn on you in the form of more fulfilling work and more stable relationships. In truth, you cannot always be the strong one, or the one who sets the standard for dedication and stability. It’s too much work, and robs you of being in the position to receive — something you very much deserve, and something you’ll learn to do. PW
