Next World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Aries 2009

ONE OF MY early astrology teachers, Barbara Hand Clow, once mentioned in a workshop a phenomenon she noticed in the world, and I’ve noticed it quite a bit myself. In the language of astrology, it’s people wanting to get themselves into the 10th house without doing the work of the 9th house. In plain English, this is about wanting success and recognition without working out the education, ethics and larger issues that are involved. If we could all do more time in the 9th house, we would not see the problems with the 10th that are so common. And this is precisely what you’ve done: you’ve come through a long-term leadership-training academy called Pluto in Sagittarius.

=

Now, Pluto is at the top of your chart — your 10th solar house — and this is calling on you to be on top of your game. You are arriving here when the world is in the midst of enormous change in the business sector: everyone and everything is supposedly shrinking. You may be wondering how, exactly, you’re supposed to find a place for yourself in a more creative, influential or profitable role in the midst of this. Yet your astrology is precisely about the intersection of your own aspirations with the changes that the world is going through.

=

Rather than being about the Creator having a sick sense of humor, this would seem to be about synchronicity. You are arriving in what we’ll call your 10th house moment at a time when change is the dominant theme. The way to handle this, if you ask me, is not to proceed as if everything were normal, but to start the conversation with yourself and anyone advising you by fully acknowledging the fact that we are in a moment of profound change, and then making all of your plans around figuring out how to make the most of this.

=

This is the most basic business strategy out there; it’s just that individuals who are accustomed to being on the personal strategy end of the world rather than the business strategy end may not think of it. This shift is less about what you do, and more about thinking of yourself in a new way: less as someone whose role is to perform a function.

=

The key here is reorientation. It’s about positioning your mind in such a way that you actually see what is available. More than anything your life is a story about seeing the possibilities — and for many reasons which I will get into, this should be easier than ever.

=

In order to be an ethical person and also play the game of life, most of us need to make some adjustments. Note that these are different from ignoring the issues or the total compromises that we are expected to make.

=

They involve a more complex relationship to oneself and one’s intentions than we are normally accustomed to hearing about. We need to apply some whole-systems thinking to the equation. What you seem to have been very busy doing, meanwhile, is forming a relationship to what various spiritual movements call the ‘high self’: the unfamiliar self, but the one that knows you better than you do.

=

I mean that you are in contact with your authentic spiritual roots, which to me equates to having faith in existence that is based on awareness of your cosmic origins. Indeed, this sense of inner strength can be so strong that (at least in many times past) you have taken it for granted, without necessarily checking in with the wisdom it has to offer you.

=

It is the potential shunning of something you have in abundance that most often leads you to come from the surface of your mind, rather than connecting with your underlying motives and the strength that would offer you. Pluto in Sagittarius has compelled you again and again to check in with another source of intelligence than the ones you have typically accessed through your life.

=

Now is your moment to put your deepest intelligence, your faith and your self-knowledge to work. When you do you will discover how much of these things you have, and have to share with the people around you. You will figure out just how important your example to the world is.

=

Aries is the astrological archetype of initiative, turning the key on the engine of intention. Eris asks: just who is having this intention, and why? For you this is not a simple question, because you may be involved with so many layers and dimensions of “self” and “intention” that your personality can feel, at times, like total chaos. This is one of those states you can only address by going to a deeper level, or a higher level, as you prefer to think of it. What you need to remember is your definition of yourself as a mental concept is entirely variable, which is another way of saying that it’s subject to creativity. Not it, but who you are is subject to creativity.

=

In other words, you are not the passive recipient of “an identity” and its “treatment in the world.” You are in a situation where you need, more than most people, to be a conscious architect of your reality. That need is based on a larger-than-usual dose of personality chaos; which in turn offers you more creative juice. The thing is you are not making an art project or a musical composition, you are the art project.

=

We all go through this, but Eris is closely associated with any version of that story of the castaway woman. To the world she looks like the one who won’t conform; she won’t be the woman everyone expects her to be. From the outside she’s shunned. Then you meet her and you find out she is a healer who can help you with what ails you; she is a midwife who can deliver your baby; she is an independent woman who is not owned by any man; she has unusual powers. For anyone who has read Iron John by Robert Bly, Eris represents the female equivalent of the archetypal primal woman: the proto-woman who was never tamed.

=

Because you are an Aries, the sign Capricorn is one of your personal angles, and therefore you become a kind of personal delegate of this stage of our culture’s growth. You are a kind of mediator.

=

Another shade of this dilemma is wanting to change the past without understanding history. It is true that there are often better ways to do things, but this rarely works if we don’t understand the methods, motives and intentions that led to the way things are now.

=

If, as your charts strongly suggest, the emphasis of your professional life is going to shift in the direction of business, it’s crucial that you understand what is happening in the government and business environment to the best extent that you can.

=

And as long as you remain self-aware and willing to look at the world as it is and not just as you want it to be, you will have that perspective, and many people around you will benefit from it.

=

I’m going to take a not-so-wild guess and propose that you’re fully aware that what we are lacking is the cooperation factor. There is all this stress between the individual ego and the need to surrender a piece of that in order to work and share purpose with others.

=

Most people do things all the time that they don’t really believe in, and when it comes to doing what they actually do believe in, there is a presumption that either the personal risk is too great; or that it’s not cool to stand out too much (basically, the same idea as the first). You have been doing a very strange dance with this individualism/conformity issue the past few years, and lately the tension has been so stiff you could, well, you could dance on it.

=

It’s better than feeling like you belong somewhere then it turns out that you don’t. The real drama involves the need for a sense of belonging, which is a need shared by humans and nearly every other species.

=

The Aquarian struggle that we all face — and you most poignantly — is about how to maintain our individuality and also be part of something. We have passed the days when we can sacrifice who we are to be accepted by others. Such is not acceptance at all; it would be selling out.

=

I suggest that you be so clear on the nature of your own tribal wounding — that is, rejection from various tribes including potentially your family — so that you can clearly sense the tendencies of the people around you, and where you actually fit into their lives.

=

Cooperation means harnessing the power of others for a common purpose. It is a skill, and there is a trick to it: that trick is about being authentically yourself at all times. Fake nothing. State your agenda and your goals. State clearly what you need. And then listen to what you hear coming back in your direction.

=

You need to be assessing your value, which implies “value to the world,” and you need to do this in something other than just numbers.

=

Venus in your own sign is about seeing and expressing the opposite part of your nature than you usually express. And it is a beautiful image in the Buddhist style of “Everything I see is me.” There is a great gift here. You may figure out that you don’t need to be “in love,” you can simply love; or looked at another way, that you can be in love with the world and that is just fine.

=

Small World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Aries 2008

If you cannot fit into the known structure of reality, then it’s time for that structure to change.

=

If you work from an inner locus of awareness, you will find that the choices, actions and direction you need to take are obvious and that there is next to no resistance. Therefore, when in doubt, pull in and perceive yourself first and the world second.

=

Another theme is how you handle confrontation when you seem to be the weaker party, the one more aware of your fears. Though the Mars retrograde ends in January and works itself out through May, these are aspects that will color the next two years of your life with one crucial question: when do you feel safe, and what leads you to feel that way? The question is more powerful than the answer.

=

You possess or are possessed by a bit of the raging impetuous, but you need and lust for people with focus. And these are people you are drawn to, those who focus their passion and put it to work for them. Instinctively, you want to learn from them, to become like them, to open yourself to their influence and let it fill you up.

=

Saturn becomes the container and allows pleasure to open. For such a fiery soul as yours, this desire that meets the need to slow down, to enjoy, to taste life — and to use precious time to accomplish real things.

=

With Saturn transiting Virgo through the next eight or so seasons, you’re going to be working side-by-side with some interesting people, and one or more will get your attention. The one you like best may be older and in a position of authority, certainly a person of enhanced wisdom. Part of the aura drawing you in is their experience and expertise; you are being presented with teaching models, for which relationships are excellent when they are working well. Working well means when we choose people on the basis of respect rather than their image.

=

The benefit of having assistance in the form of one or more people you respect deeply is precisely that their capacity to make things happen in a lasting material reality will teach you the discipline to do so, which comes with the discipline of knowing and understanding yourself.

=

Your relationships will have a teaching and learning quality, but they need not be a directive model, that is, someone telling you what to do or how to do it. Rather, you are here to learn that for yourself — to master the Saturn principle (focus and structure) through your work and working relationships. The idea is to view others who know more than you as realistic collaborators with your creative destiny, but to find and use the inner strength to be your own master.

=

The story of your life is driven by the fact that you are not the same person every day. This has always been true, to a point, but it’s become such a prominent feature of your psyche that there is no denying it. Don’t try — work with it consciously.

=

Your lover or lovers need to take that diamond journey with you. He, she or they need to feel confident waking up with you and not knowing who to expect; not knowing what you will say or who you will be or why you think you are alive. Moreover, anyone you choose to explore with must be comfortable with the fact that you are going beyond your self-concept and into some deeper core reality of who you are — and they must be willing to go into this space themselves. There is that constant sense of being guided past what you knew, what you felt or what you believed yesterday.

=

Let your experiments with sex, for their part, push and stretch you into new shapes. Imagine that one day a long time ago you were dipped in Elmer’s Glue and it coated you with a semi-flexible coating you thought was your skin. Now you are cracking that coating, stretching it, peeling it off, getting it wet and setting free the hot, tactile and extremely sensitive skin below. This is what sex can do for you, and it works mostly on your psyche.

=

If you have a lover, I suggest you talk to them openly about doing something besides strict monogamy. I don’t mean anarchy — I mean some arrangement where you get to be spontaneous and not need to seek permission from anyone to exist.

=

You need to be experimenting socially, and without fetters. Keep your old friends, but get some new ones, with new rules and new privileges. Pretend you’re a reporter for News of the Weird, and your job is to get the real story — even if you have to make it up.

=

As you do this you are cutting a niche for yourself in the world, but one of its qualifications is that you have the ability to adapt constantly from that position, rather than getting stuck in patterns.

=

Just bear in mind, this inner process you’re in, where you change identities every day — the thing that holds most people back from growing and changing in lasting ways is social conformity. It is pressure from their friends to stay the same. You will need to bring all of your Aries power to bear on this, pluck up some courage, and be yourself.

=

The Conjunction portends a revolution in how a human being perceives herself or himself amidst the chaos of the current model of the psyche. If we tune into the energy of this alignment, it can guide us toward a sane idea of who we are in an insane time. It can point to a way to relate to the world from that new idea of who we are. You are a kind of living experiment because The Conjunction is taking place in your sign, and you can feel it the most vividly; you become its exemplar.

=

We forget, amidst all the diversions of modern life, that we are all working to survive on a tiny blue speck in the deeps of space and time. Being grounded with a sense of purpose is about the best thing anyone can hope for, and this blessing you have; it is yours if you accept it.

Spiral Door — excerpts from annual horoscope for Aries 2007

Many people talk about reincarnation, but I have noticed that whether we intend it or not, one incarnation is an experience of multiple lifetimes, and I think that on one level the whole theme of supposedly multiple incarnations is a metaphor for change in current lifetimes.

=

There are things we will do in our fantasies, in certain states of mind, under specific circumstances or with certain people, that we would not vaguely imagine doing at other moments, and would not want known outside those environments. When we’re in fully revved mode, it’s nearly impossible to feel the self that resists or denies.

=

The real issue of continuity, if you ask me, is that of opening our various compartments and integrating the many people we contain within us at once, rather than in sequence. This is called integration.

=

As those who work with astrology, we know the cosmic model mirrors the psyche and vice versa. Eris was discovered in your sign, and this can give you a new way to think about yourself. Imagine that there is a vortex in your mind, through which any self is possible to reach at once, or through which any may reach out toward you. Time, space, inner compartments, how you felt yesterday, who you were in a past life — they’re all mobile; all available, all equally meaningful and/or irrelevant.

=

You can go into yourself, and somehow come out anywhere, any time.

=

As long as you stay away from the opening, you can safely feel that you are the same person as you were yesterday. As you shift your awareness toward your center and allow yourself to be drawn toward that place that feels like an intense, perhaps difficult, perhaps frightening point of inner focus, you have your freedom. It’s a place where any potential is available now, from which you can in a sense reach through all your selves to find the one entity they have in common. This is the being at the core of who you are who is the one doing the supposed reincarnating, changing, compartmentalizing, or whatever the case is.

=

For one thing, a sense of mission is starting to coalesce in your life like never before. For another, you are starting to let go of your exterior identities and are relating to the world from an evermore centered place.

=

The gravity you feel, the compelling force drawing you in spirals through the Spiral Door, is your own soul’s inclination not only to grow and become, but to fully express yourself in the physical world and in ordinary consciousness.

=

Eris is a reminder to allow your curiosity to burn like a hot torch, and to let the heat and light of that torch guide you.

=

You are being summoned to a new role in the world, not by outer circumstances just yet, but by a process of change so deep and so interior that there will arrive the day when you either cannot go on as you are now, or you will move effortlessly, fully, with both feet, plus heart, mind and soul, into whatever is next. You will know that point when you get there, and I can assure you that the decision will seem smaller in reality than it does when you project into the future from where you stand today. For now, your sense of mission may bear little resemblance to what you wake up and do every day.

=

The problem with becoming aware of soul is that we also become aware of something called shadow. Pluto will call attention to the shadow, and then once we see that, we get the light at the core. This can work quickly or not, consciously or not: today, we have options.

=

One of my old astrology teachers, Barbara Hand Clow, commented once in a workshop that a big problem with the world as we know it is that people try to jump to the 10th house without doing the work of the 9th house.

=

If Pluto represents the soul and the Galactic Core represents something that resides ‘at the core’ of all existence, the result is that you are personally having this encounter on a level so deep it would normally defy all awareness: but your whole life has been building toward this for a long time.

=

[…] allow the mission aspect of your life to develop as a consequence of your growth and awareness.

=

[…] outer stability tends to follow inner stability (though not always).

=

In practical terms, be open to change in your relationships, and also how you express yourself in them. The personal qualities you take for granted, whether you feel you can assert yourself, whether you expect your needs to be met, who ‘makes’ you feel secure, and all the rules that surround sexual desire — all are up for rearrangement. Take none of it for granted, and be aware that behavior patterns that once seemed deep and intractable may suddenly seem superficial and completely open to change.

=

At the end of all of this, you will be ready for an entirely different kind of partner, and the seasons ahead are a time of transition from one reality to the other.

=

Mars retrograde later in the year suggests that you need to work consciously at being the source of your own security.

=

If living a life dedicated to truth and growth brings tests, this is one of them. It is true that themes like confronting the injuries and fears that we carry from the past, feeling safe and secure, and taking responsibility for our feelings are often the most meaningful. If you’re willing to do that, you will likely notice that you have strikingly useful resources that help you in the process. You will discover you have talents and gifts you had never dreamed of, and that as you apply your willingness rather than your will, the cosmic forces conspire to help you on your way.
