Next World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope from Gemini 2009

What we do experience is lurking anxiety, and a stressful relationship with change, even if it’s the change we want the most. For strength and supposed security, we tend to lean on structure, even if it’s structure that’s taking enormous energy to support and is preventing us from doing what we want.

=

I know that you can tell the difference between responsibility that is based on obligation, and responsibility to yourself that has its roots in your chosen journey on this Earth.

=

But living these choices takes guts. And it takes awareness of things that we don’t necessarily want to confront and for which others don’t often support us. For example, most people don’t like to admit that as mortal beings, we exist in a constant relationship to death. Because we tend to deny this relationship unless actually confronted by it, many things that would be more accurately described as transition, transformation, growth, progress and ordinary change actually masquerade as something frightful. Denying the simple truth leads to complicated lies.

=

About 10 years ago I woke up one morning from a dream of a crow, and the message that, “You will not have a conscious relationship to life until you have a conscious relationship to death.” I wondered: why am I getting this information? Is it some kind of omen? And then I realized: embrace this idea as absolutely necessary. Many spiritual traditions, and humanistic traditions, make this point. I once asked my Gestalt therapist, Joe Trusso, what to do about death, and he said, “Dance with it.”

=

With this came the recognition that the human form would, itself, need to be set aside by the soul group that has been incarnating over the eons (that would be all of us, incarnating over and over again). I felt and recognized with full awareness that there would arrive a day when we would all, collectively, let go of the human experience itself and move onto some other collective embodiment, designed to serve another purpose that humanity as we think of it, the high and the low, is not capable of serving.

=

Everything we will have lived through as humans on Earth, seemingly great and seemingly small, all the wars and the brilliant art, the fraud, the ordinary life; the losses and the gains, adds up to this one transition.

=

Now, if you would, consider this: we’ve already done this before. All of us who are here were once part of something else; something that seemed like all there was, but which we gradually realized was just one step in a much larger process. We moved on from some other form having mastered its lessons and maximized its potential. If we could see that, we might look back at it and think: how simple were those lessons. What was the big deal? Why did it take us so long? What, exactly, were we afraid of?

=

The deeper reality is that you often find yourself embedded in situations that, no matter how progressive they seemed at first, quickly take on the characteristic of being hung up in the past. It often seems like you agree to one thing and get something entirely different.

=

There is hardly a better picture of karma than Capricorn in the 8th house — and hardly a better picture of resolving, and freeing energy and joy, than Pluto coming through this house.

=

If you’ve had any kind of ominous sense of your own existence lately, or the imminence of some profound shift in your life, or if you have been gradually warming up to enormous changes that you sense are inevitable anyway, we have some astrological imagery to go with it. The movement is deeper than it seems on the outside.

=

You have to go deeper: and when you do, you may find yourself wondering why your parents’ and grandparents’ relationships were what they were. Your life is part of a larger life. The values that are supposedly your own are at least half the shared property of others.

=

If you are feeling some overwhelming question about the meaning of your existence, welcome to Pluto in your 8th solar house. Welcome to a conscious relationship to life, and a conscious relationship to change, which is usually experienced as death.

=

Gemini is the first of the human signs, that is, the first sign to depict human form. The zodiac is predominantly a collection of animal forms; this is not true of your sign. Here the ancients left us with a little joke: there are two people in the picture. Maybe they are twins, brothers, sisters or lovers; but there are two of them depicted. Usually you live with this as dualism, as two distinct aspects of your nature.

=

What is not commonly known or spoken of is that the twofold nature of Gemini involves theВ mortal versus the immortal qualities of human consciousness. The mortal aspect we associate with the body and the ego. The immortal aspect we associate with the soul or the spirit. The two are in a relationship, though it has a way of being unconscious. Yet they are in fact aware of one another; they depend on one another to create this experience that we call human. Together, the polarity, truly experienced, may be the source of what we call consciousness.

=

If we refuse to look at one side of the equation or the other, we lose awareness of the experience in total. This is why life-affirming events remind us of mortality, and why mortality reminds us of the beauty and indeed the fact of existence. So as you embark on this 8th house journey, remember to hold those two mirrors of consciousness to one another, and to look for your reflection in both of them.

=

We often hear that relationships are the most effective teachers (if only we would grasp the lessons!). And so while you’ve encountered one relationship situation more intense than the next, and a few that pushed you nonstop for the entire duration that Pluto was in Sagittarius, you were growing, and the quality of this growth was expressing itself as something seemingly unrelated: a quest in the outer world, and a gradual awakening of your spiritual sensibilities to a level that has truly surprised you.

=

During most of the years that Pluto was in Sagittarius, Neptune in Aquarius was doing its work in your chart and in your life as well. This transit, through your 9th solar house, has granted you a vision of what life could be like far in the future. It may have seemed so far in the future that you counted it as little more than ideal or a kind of hope. The vision may have lacked form, it may have lacked a name and it very likely lacked any sense of practical application.

=

Then came Chiron, which pushed your process into hyper speed. This took hold during the past four years. I would describe this as learning something profound or embarking on a conscious quest. It may have arrived as a crisis of belief, or some situation where your ideals were challenged and you had to put them to some kind of a test.

=

For most people, this is an incredible step to take: in many ways, individuality is founded on the freedom to believe what we know to be true, not what others say is true.

=

The question is, are you far enough along on the process of dismantling your old values to be able to embrace something that is actually new? This is the question that will dominate your life for the next two to three years, as Pluto spurs the process of breaking apart and understanding the old, while Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune help you manifest your highest visions.

=

The notion of a self beyond the self points to the potential for some aspect of the ’self’ living beyond the life of the mortal coil, because in theory it is not dependent upon the body for its existence.

=

You know that you need to be free: economically, sexually, spiritually and in many other ways. Prepare yourself to confront the taboos against all of these things. Be prepared for people to assert their so-called power against you, and know the price you are willing to pay for your freedom. It will be both more and less than you now imagine; more in that you actually do have to take a chance in order to be free, and buck up against our society’s overwhelming premium placed on guilt. It will be less in the sense that you are not really going to miss what you think you are giving up, and you will welcome with open arms the gifts that come to you.

=

One of these gifts, simply, is freedom. But along the way, remember what you are being freed from, and what you are being freed to. Remember that freedom and healing and immortality are things we don’t do alone. What you are going through now is not just about you. If you look closely you will see that everyone you know is experiencing something parallel, perhaps in a different aspect of their lives and spoken of in different words, but you are not alone. You never really were.

Small World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope from Gemini 2008

Whoever you met, you had to face yourself. It was exhausting and maybe even boring — until it got interesting.

=

Because the soul pushes from the deeper end of our inner ocean, we get in touch with our desires and passions: the wants and don’t wants that we are constantly negotiating internally.

=

You are likely to go through an extended phase of taking second opportunities for things that you missed the first time around. You now have the chance to go deeper.

=

When you look back over recent history, I propose that it was those experiences where contact seemed impossible that put you into the deepest contact with yourself. That is what you need to count on, bank on and put to good use now. Any contact that you have with the world around you depends irrevocably on your inner sense of yourself.

=

Your life starts with you. It obviously goes further than you, but you’re the thing doing the sensing, the experiencing, the decision-making and setting events into motion

=

As it turns out, there are not two sides to every story; there is not even a story; there is you — your conscious existence. You were compelled to stop talking to yourself, and instead initiate an authentic dialog with yourself.

=

What you have experienced is the alchemy that transforms the negative into the positive. The polarity can never be separated because we need to experience the inner void of the other’s absence (or their not being what we think we want or need) to feel where we are present. This process, though painful and fearful, is the stepping-stone of a real identity, the one needed to truly meet others on an equal basis and level ground.

=

In a sense, to groove with anyone, you have to be exceptionally tuned in to yourself. The thing that you may notice is a distinct amorality.

=

At the moment you have the option to relate to people in ways that exceed the known morality of the world, or of your own past. You have the chance to reach the core of your potential, and it will often be others who set the example or lead the way.

=

This is a continuing experience in learning to allow others to have an influence on you, and moreover, to accept the fact that they simply do have that influence.

=

You may find yourself having to constantly adapt, but don’t adapt too much; save your energy and just appreciate the strangeness.

=

Keep moving, keep your eyes open, say what you need to say and listen to what people say to you. Remember that being careful is one of the most important factors when you are walking through a strange land.

You may not think of a stiff shoulder as ‘thought’ but if you ask it what it has on its mind, you may get an extremely interesting answer. This body consciousness will allow you to have an inner database, and at times an inner alarm, that will prove very useful whenВ you are on the move.

=

You may be pushed into positions where you need to negotiate. You now know how to do this, and what you need is to do it consciously, using your skills. What you may not recognize is that people who are having so much impact on you are themselves feeling the impact of the world other ways.

=

Sexually, this transit is like few others. You may experience it as extreme sexual submission, combined with an attraction to those you consider powerful beyond measure. Remember that this energy is for the most part erotic in nature, though it’s connected to a craving to break down your ego structure and surrender.

=

The problem with mixing sex and money is that it becomes extremely difficult to sort out boundaries, once that happens. Boundaries become more important as the theme of power enters your relationships, and that is a high likelihood as the next couple of years progress.

=

Most of all, you need to not make excuses for others: not for their behavior, their ideas, their needs, how they treat you or what they are doing. You need to let others own who they are, so that you can own who you are.

=

You need to judge your career by some standard other than the job you want to get out of. You need to judge by some standard other than your rГ©sumГ©.

=

Also, if you start to work toward something you care about, two things happen. The first one is that you have to deal with, or dispense with, all the things you don’t care about. The second one is you have to work your way through the morass of emotional relationships that hold you down to who everyone thought you were.

=

Saturn coming through your 4th house is all about letting the past be the past and the present be the present. But before that it’s often necessary to get a real feeling for how the past is the present. In other words, generally we are in total denial about living in the past. You will notice as you start to feel the effects of Saturn prompting you to pay attention to what is happening now; and to what emotional ties you want to sever, now.

=

It is never easy for humans to move on from emotional ties, and when they do they often take old patterns with them. The way to resolve this is to see the old patterns for what they are, and you can do this by giving them language. If you have thoughts about how you feel, give them words. Then study the words, and connect them to the different roots and branches of your life, and see where they come from. Notice whose words you are using.

=

The world may be calling you further than you think you’re willing to go. So you may want to work with your willingness.

=

Feelings are about more than words; ultimately, when you have something that you know, you have to use what you know — or it is quite literally useless.

=

You have the freedom to be restless, the freedom to create independence, and the experience to stand up to anyone who would get in your way. Remember that there will be some matters where no compromise is possible. There will be matters where compromise is a do-or-die necessity. There will be others where it’s a choice. It is up to you to know the difference, and it’s up to you to say what is fair.

The Spiral Door — excerpts from annual horoscope for Gemini 2007

I am fairly certain that the beginning of this transit was the most difficult, through 1999, when Nessus, a Centaur planet, was accompanying Pluto in Sagittarius. In a sense, Nessus accelerated the transit, pushing a lot of the darker material normally associated with Pluto out into the open.
=
Nessus in particular has a way of revealing the interpersonal dynamics that comprise betrayal and cruelty. In other words, these things are not lacking for a cause. When they are present, we play some part, be it through expecting these qualities to be there, not recognizing them when they are there, or having a blind spot about the same qualities in ourselves.
=
Pluto is basically a process of making what was hidden available to work with, and one of the advantages to working with astrology is that process, in itself, can be seen for what it is.
=
Saturn will always focus its energy on the house it’s transiting, even despite other seemingly stronger factors.
=
To sum up, I would propose that the transit of Pluto through Sagittarius has provided one continuous opportunity to meet the world on its terms, and for you to insist that it meet you on your own. This has been a long journey, like scaling a mountain, but more like learning to handle yourself under any circumstances. The world is full of power games; you have learned the rules of these games, learned to play them to your advantage, and most important, learned to get out of the way when you need to.
=
The Spiral Door phase is about loosening up that orientation, consolidating your knowledge and getting ready to move onto something new. With important Pluto transits, this can be a challenge because they can take so long to get used to. Then, once we have gotten into the process, the years have slipped by and it’s time for something new.
=
This is the time to remember. It may also be a time of forming or developing existing partnerships that you will carry into the future. These are the relationships that can stand awareness, that are agents of change, and where your agenda is aligned enough with that of your fellow travelers that you can both relate from the soul level. And that, it would seem, is the moral of the story: relating from the soul level, indeed, making that your priority.
=
In the book “Esoteric Astrology”, Alice A. Bailey describes Gemini as “the light of interplay,” adding that it reveals “that which opposes, or the basic duality of manifestation, the relationship between spirit and form. It is the conscious light of that relationship” [on p. 329 of the softcover edition].
=
Read that a few times (with esoteric writing, you have to), and then please allow me to paraphrase. Gemini’s main job is to reveal consciously the relationship between spirit and form.
=
We live in a world that is hung up on forms. We have different names for them: status, appearance, perception, roles and so on. Within the forms is the content, the essence of life, but we tend not to notice. Indeed, the world is all about not noticing, and what we call the spiritual path is all about going beneath the surface (of oneself and of others) and experiencing what is below. So, here, we have another image of what it has meant to experience Pluto in Sagittarius, or to say that you have grown into a space where you’ve learned to relate on the soul level. This is the level below the form; what many spiritual paths call reality. You have also learned to experience yourself on this level.
=
It is one thing to be intuitive, but that is different than emotional, and indeed, you can be quite intuitive when it comes to finances.
=
The financial story of this year involves your coming to understand all of your beliefs about money that don’t work. Many of them are based on insecurities. Many of those come from your mother. To successfully handle money, we need to act like an adult, not like a child under parental authority, or a parent controlling a child.
=
Another layer of this story is that you are likely to perceive your value in what you have to give, and this may preclude or at least create an obstacle to the possibility of receiving. I would, again, urge you to look at your parents and see who among them had this kind of attitude, because it likely comes from one of them, and was reinforced in you by their conduct and teaching.
=

Cancer on this house involves cycles, both financial and of self-esteem, and the two are related. Indeed, not enough has been said about this relationship, to which astrology points vividly. Wherever Cancer is in one’s chart, there will be dependable cyclical movement.
=
The big questions are likely to involve certain past values about effort and labor.
=
One of these involves the question of sacrifice, which seems to have been pre-programmed into you from a young age, and connected directly to the value of your efforts.
=
I have had a discussion a number of times with young people considering going into the esoteric arts as a profession, who often say some form of, “Yes, but is it right to charge money to help someone?” to which I reply, “Would you rather charge money to hurt them?”
=
At some point, you’re going to need to feel great about being paid to help people, and getting paid well. This is your natural mode of expression — you were indeed born to help. The trick will be making this work for you rather than against you: in essence, never being the victim of your own willingness to help others. And, to do this, you will need to be alert to the games that can and often do come with the act of helping or being helped.
=
I have a feeling that most of this is emotionally rooted, and thus tends to not express itself in words. And this is, in part, why you insist on such clear and at times oppressive agreements with people, contracts that have an odd tendency to trap you in places and situations you don’t want to be, but which offer you a kind of pseudo stability. As you understand what is holding you down, and put it into terms you can understand, and address consciously, I think you will be able to relax a bit. This will help you slip into the natural flow of abundance that can really be yours — in all respects, and in all kinds of relationships. This will feel like a miracle, and it will be one: the miracle of awareness. And that, fortunately, is available all the time.
