Next World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Libra 2009

YOU ARE EMBARKING on what I will call your Creative Age, my Libra cousin: a time when your true talent can and, if you cooperate or at least stay out of the way, will emerge. Libra is, I feel, one of those zones in the sky or in the psyche (where astrology is concerned, they are the same thing) from which humanity draws from its deepest creative well.

=

Activity in your 5th solar house (the house of daring creative enterprise, sexual exploration and childlike curiosity) is a light burning bright in the darkness of the world.

=

Bear in mind that it takes true courage to bring beauty into this world; and it takes honoring a sense of not knowing, of uncertainty and indeed of insecurity. True creativity is facilitated by a mixture of both. Like the poles of a battery, the potential difference between being brave and insecure is what allows the energy to flow. It would seem you have this going for you right now, and for the foreseeable future.

=

Therefore, I would encourage you to use your fear as a source of strength. I would suggest you use your sense of being displaced, or uncertain of where you need to be on the planet, as another source of strength. Whatever you may be feeling on the most ordinary levels of consciousness, you are the inheritor of a deep taproot into your ancestry, which is allowing your struggle for grounding to finally unfold in a tangible way. This is liberating your strength; because you don’t know, you have the power to look and see what might be so.

=

Neptune is about what we can perceive truly when our spiritual eyes are open. Those eyes don’t open until we have a sense of worldly justice, suggested by Astraea. We acquire that sense of justice by using our discernment, rather than merely obsessing over how things appear, or what our preconceived opinion is. We need compassion as well. This confluence of your spiritual eyes opening, of compassion, of your sense of justice and your ability to allow in the flow of beauty are all delicately intertwined in your charts this year.

=

Your relationships must support your work; and your medicine, so to speak, must be taken on the level of food and not a drug. This is to say, at this formative stage of your growth, you need to pay close attention to who and what depletes you, and who and what nourishes you.

=

I think we do moreВ seeking oneself in the other than we care to imagine; more falling in love with oneself in the guise of the other than we would prefer to admit. We usually have unkind words for people in whom we perceive this to be true; but it happens to everyone. There are other options where relationships are concerned, but our culture has a way of banning self-awareness and pushing narcissism on us in a way that, in the end, alienates us from ourselves and one another. Whatever may be happening in the outer life of your relationship(s), I suggest that you observe this process happening, as it develops. I suggest that you do something bold and see your projections; and make a conscious choice to call them back and take full ownership of them.

=

We all need support. We all need to see some reflection in the universe; something and someone familiar that we recognize as home. There is something about this aspect that suggests you allow your relationships to point you back to yourself. You will know you’re really doing this when you begin to make discoveries about the people around you, particularly if you have known them for a while. This is to say, as you begin to make inroads into yourself, you will see and experience the people you love differently.

=

True, the human race has been percolating for a few thousand generations, and some of this is likely to be getting encrypted into our DNA. But it does not mean we need to be its prisoners, nor prisoners of cultural rules.

=

Pluto in Capricorn is here to do two things for you, both of which will help you deepen your relationship to existence and feel safer on the planet as a matter of reality and not idealism.

=

One is that it’s going to subvert all of the Great Depression-era consciousness that was handed down to you, and outdated values from many other eras in history that you have collected like so many chachkas in a curio cabinet. The problem begins when these chachkas tell you what to do or think, or that if you sell them on e-Bay they are going to make your life miserable. In other words, you need to consider carefully your relationship to antiquated ideas about what makes you safe, secure or worthwhile.

=

Next is that you need to consider carefully your relationship to anyplace wherein you strive to take shelter, including your own feelings. This includes your physical dwelling and all of its characteristics and all of your beliefs about them. You may be developing a profound sense of your need to be emotionally independent and secure in your own space. Remember that security is a concept. If you think your front door is locked, you are more likely to feel safe. If you think it’s unlocked you are less likely to feel safe. This has nothing to do with the actual status of the lock on the door.

=

A wise old owl once said to me: “In this world, it’s possible to sell your time, your labor or your ideas. You sell all three.” I suggest you look at this equation and determine to what extent you offer which of these. Is something out of balance? Are you selling too much time and labor, and not enough ideas?

=

The integrity piece here is a balance of independence and involvement; which is another way of saying that clarity is vital to the process.

=

I suggest you enter any situation knowing what you stand to lose and what you stand to gain. And there is one more factor: what you have to share. Sharing yourself is perhaps the biggest risk there is because after all, you may not be accepted.

=

Remember that we are all in this together. While you personally are likely to be feeling an enormous craving for change, for restructuring your beliefs and for expressing yourself, not everyone is so far along. Not everyone feels the depth of necessity that you do, and they, too, are taking a chance both on themselves and on you.

=

I would propose, rather, that you want to do things in the fashion of the most progressive future that you can imagine. Progressive means progress, not doing things unconsciously the old-fashioned way. Progress means creating something new, participating in ways that are unfamiliar for you, and making sure that you hold close to your heart the relationship between awareness and adventure.

Small World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Libra 2008

You may find yourself shifting or severing ties to family, setting boundaries with the people around you, and making decisions that once seemed daunting or difficult. In general, you are about to take big strides toward being your own person, in your own way — and most of all, in your own place or space.

=

You’re also someone who treasures the past, who has an unusual relationship to the past, and who in some ways may be intractably stuck to the past. All of that is about to change. The movement of Pluto into your 4th solar house starts to open up those areas of congestion, gets the different parts of you talking to the other different parts of you, and begins to draw you into the present like few astrological developments of your lifetime.

=

There is a difference between having a connection to your history, and being stubborn and disrespectful. You may feel you need someone else to get their act together and make some changes, but what your own astrology is doing is encouraging you to find your own freedom. In particular, you can and must find your freedom from your emotional patterns and from your sense that “this is the way things are done.”

=

I am suggesting that you do nothing less than wage a revolution from the past.

=

Guilt is one of those traditions that would benefit from being put onto the fireplace like a pile of old letters. It is closely related to control, in your case, self-control and also the control that others exerted on you as a child.

=

You may have to pull up some old roots, but you will be putting down deeper, stronger ones. You may find yourself somewhere new and strange, but you have the power to connect to others emotionally from that space.

=

Though the most obvious emphasis is, at the moment, an emotional one focused on your most private life, everything is pointing you toward creative mastery, erotic breakthrough and creating some unusual contact with the wider culture in the process.

=
YOU NEED TO go beyond the stereotypes of what attracts you to people, and reach for the essence of what does. To do this you will need to see your own prejudices in action, which is not easy — but it’s possible. Your prejudices are likely to function as protective shields that actually protect you from nothing; they are the equivalent of holding your hands in front of your face in a movie.

=

You’ll know you’re there when you accept that you don’t really have an influence in the process, only the choice of whether to hold space for someone, or not.

=

Holding space is making a conscious choice to allow someone to be who they are, and holding open your own emotional space for them to be that way without judgment.

=

I am suggesting that you have a specific need, which is to express yourself in the emotional and in particular, the erotic realms as one who holds space for others. This is a rare gift, you have it profoundly at the moment, and you are one of its beneficiaries.

=

Yet there is a connection, in that when you are making space for others, you allow yourself to be who you are, independently of them. You also become sensitive to the often-elusive ‘third space’ in a relationship, that shared space that two people create with their intentions, love and creative will.

=

The feeling of Saturn in the 12th is like living on an island. There may be other people on the island, but you’re far from the mainland, and the people may not exactly be your type of crowd. So you keep to yourself, mostly. You can leave the island, and people can come to you, but it’s far from the land so there is a crossing involved. But when people show up, the contact can be very deep. Yet on some level, human contact that you expect will give you the feeling of completion does always leaves you wanting something a little more, or maybe it’s a little different. You can actually stabilize on this sense of change, and grow into yourself as you do.

=

As you go through the day in normal ego waking consciousness, the dream feels like it’s contained in some distant place and time yet oddly it feels like it’s right next to us.

=

It’s the place where nothing is taboo and there is no such thing as inappropriate. All the normal boundaries of society are suspended, in a way similar to when one is dreaming.

=

It looks like a holographic image of a lover that keeps morphing into whatever you perceive it to be….One possibility is there is someone in your life who is able to morph into whatever form you need. Their sexual orientation may be entirely fluid; they may have so many facets of personality that you never know who you are going to meet. Whoever you are that day, they will approach you in a new way, and lead you beyond an old idea of yourself.

=

Remember that what you are looking for is yourself — not another person.

=

The energy of concealing onself is deeply debilitating, and you need to catch yourselfВ every time you do it. I mean in the subtle ways and the obvious ones.

=

If you are at the point where you are described as, or feel like, you are too much, inapppropriate, disruptive, or like you may get arrested for something you think, say or create — mazeltov, you are in the right place.

=

What you need are some boundaries between what is temporarily yours and what is temporarily everyone else’s. This way you know what you need from them and what you have to offer them…. Part of the problem is that you tend to confuse what belongs to you and what belongs to others; and others have the same tendency with you. That is the thing to look out for.

=

And it all points to being willing to take some chances. Most of those chances involve daring to be yourself despite what you think others may think.

=

The Spiral Door — excerpts from annual horoscope for Libra 2007

YOUR SIGN has such a strong empathy with other people that it’s difficult for you to see the impact you have on them. In other words, your effect on people is so pervasive that it’s often invisible both to you and to them, blending into the environment in which you live. Cause and effect are never separate, but to observe the process working it’s necessary to look from a different point of view than that to which you are normally accustomed.
=
I suggest, though, that you assess where your personal emphasis has been: have you been working to find a place for yourself, or primarily for others? Or has your place been working in support of others?
=
Saturn transiting Leo the past two years is a commentary on your role in the world, in particular an active enterprise about finding the right role, the one that specifically matches your talents.
=
The process of searching and discovery, if sincere and oftentimes even if not, frequently leads to actually finding something.
=
We do need to bear one thing in mind when considering Saturn: it’s in a long opposition to Neptune. Saturn is to Neptune what a lighthouse is to the ocean; but when you play these archetypes out in the human mind, you can get doubt, confusion, skepticism, and cynicism. So this has been a challenging transit, perhaps riddled with doubts and questions about whether you would actually succeed.
=
The point being that you are in an active dynamic with the world, one which is changing you and changing it. In this respect, if one is alive, it is impossible not to change the world.
=
Being a Libra grants you certain qualities, particularly a measure of emotional intelligence, if you choose to access it. This, combined with the ordinary kind of intelligence, can get you pretty far in life.
=
Yet things can get a little screwy when, because of your gift for empathy, you start to identify with the identity crises of others in a way you don’t recognize is happening. And it can get super duper screwy when, responding to your influence, which you don’t necessarily notice, their identity crisis is sparked.
=
Libra is able to access the usual maddening dualism of human consciousness and convert it into something useful: a multiple-viewpoint perspective.
=
Most people can go back and forth between the perspectives self-other; you can see both at once, as if they are the same thing (they are not, always). So, while you’re seeing both at once, you would do well to notice your impact, and the environment into which you’re broadcasting.
=
Those who dedicate themselves to creative living in some way are the ones who have woken up to their power to co-create the world in the constructive sense of the idea. You have a gift that allows you to see through the whole process, and fortunately so. You can use this gift to create a better life for yourself and for everyone around you.
=
I would propose that the discovery of Eris in your opposite sign, your relationship sign, is a factor that can prompt you to reconsider the environment of your life, your relationships, your business partnerships and any relationship that verges on enmity, or plunges all the way in.
=
I think my next article on Eris will be called, “Something Missing.” A lot of people are walking around with Something Missing. Then they find you and they think that you are it. This is good; you get to relate, you have a captive audience, you have an abundant supply of relating subjects. It is also bad; you often get to relate in a way that is not fully satisfying because you have so many relationships with Something Missing.
=
Eris speaks of the chaos and discord of the world, and its roots in the personality that are the source of that chaos.
=
To me, the discovery of Eris has a resounding message for Libra, which is get curious, turn on your headlights, use your radar, and pay attention like you’ve never paid attention before. Look for people who are consciously becoming self-aware.
=
Watch how people relate to their environment. Anyone who does not notice their environment is either vain, depressed or deeply insecure, and the three are sometimes closely related. Anyone who cannot talk about an idea is a candidate. But you really need to spot these people fast, and respond appropriately.
=

So — notice who notices; notice who does not; see if you can spot the live ones. Remember you are a live one. Learn to spot games. It’s a skill you will need.
=
What you get with [Venus] retrograde, potentially, is the following:

1. A chance to test how the boundaries of friendship, love, romance and sex work for you, and what it means to exist apart from these things. Any phase where you feel isolated is a good opportunity to step back from the world and assess your life.

2. A chance to test boundaries in general, as you find out the limits on who you can be to others, and the needs you have as an individual.

3. A review period of some kind, including a review of several important past relationships that may mysteriously come back into your life in an odd or seemingly haphazard way, most likely in the form of friendships, or as follow-up romances to a past experience.
=
With Sagittarius involved in this angle of your solar chart, we get an interesting picture: it’s big, it’s exotic, it’s full of ideas, it’s extremely interesting, and it’s not necessarily so responsive to you. That might lead you to want greater impact, or to search for how you find your place in the world, though imagine a little child confronted that big, big world of Sagittarius.
=
The effect this has had on you is likely to be some significant form of adopting a life philosophy of “think globally, act locally.”
=
Now is the time to get over it, that is, the time for a breakthrough, be it as a writer, thinker, or in discovering and experiencing the impact of your ideas in some new way.
=
The essence of the Spiral Door is the flourishing of your community, and your place in it, and as Pluto draws toward Capricorn, this is your safety, the place in the world that is your own, where you have deep roots.
