Next World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Taurus 2009

MARK TWAIN has that famous quote about not letting your schoolin’ get in the way of your learnin’. Carl Jung once said that most religion is the substitute for religious experience. Good astrologers remind us that the map is not the territory (but it helps to know how to read a map). You have to live your life rather than living through your chart (though it helps to understand your chart). You need to live in your truth, rather than living a plan or a concept. It can take a long time to make these distinctions.

=

I notice that religion is the thing getting in the way of original thought, progress or experience. It’s acting as a source of guilt, as a block or as something that binds them to something they don’t want…. “You don’t need to go to church to have experienced the debilitating effects of religious belief. It’s oozing from every corner of our culture. That’s how religion works.”

=

There remains in astrology the question of how Taurus acquired its faith in orthodoxy, and what its effect is on your ability to have some freedom. I am less inclined to think it has something to do with Taurus per se as I am to think it has to do with the placement of Capricorn in your solar chart.

=

Capricorn, the sign of organized beliefs and power structures (among other things), is placed in your 9th solar house. The 9th place is one of the houses where we seek liberation. On a good day, liberation comes in the form of having a new or evolving vision for our lives, a sense of potential, a wider world and another order of reality that is less constrained than the one in which we currently live. Capricorn can be a bit retro. Placed in the 9th, it feels like living in the modern world and being secretly obsessed with the ways of the past, as if they mattered now.

=

You might think of the 9th as one of the places where we go beyond the limits of our families and our society and reach for something entirely new: the education we really want rather than the one they inflicted on us; a country other than the one we were born in; justice in the form of true ideals or the higher courts; and what some spiritual traditions call the ‘higher self’, which really means going beyond the self-concept and discovering something that somehow feels more inherently real.

=

With Capricorn there, you may often feel like someone else is trying to tell you what is right and what is wrong, even though they’re not standing there. It could be your grandmother; it could be the librarian from 4th grade. It seems like there is an invisible limit on what you believe is possible, and what you don’t quite recognize is that you are running into someone else’s beliefs about what they think is possible. They feel like your beliefs. After all, they are in your mind. What’s more difficult to tell is that someone put them there, and not at random: in other words, there was an agenda.

=

Here is the really weird part. It’s not exactly obvious that the ideas about life that you carry, wherever they came from, have a way of dictating the world that you see.

=

There is a destructive aspect to Pluto, and I suggest that you make friends with it. There is always the element of death, and I suggest you embrace it. In modern interpretations, there is the element of bringing in soul-level energy rather than the more superficial thing that we usually describe as ‘ego’. Pluto beginning to work its way across your 9th house is about getting out of the box.

=

I suggest you look for these kinds of contradictions in your family history and your own thought patterns. Pluto is here to help you break down those barriers and put you in contact with what is really yours.

=

There are many rewards to this; as you may feel, you are in the process of liberating an astonishing amount of psychic energy that will open the way to freedom in the world.

=

It’s been difficult for you to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. The main issue is that you are pulled in two directions. First, you need a humanitarian career. Indeed, your solar chart says you absolutely must be involved with work that serves the collective good. This is about the placement of Aquarius in your chart.

=

It’s a spiritual value that speaks to us from somewhere other than the physical dimension of reality. It speaks of something that has to be visioned into existence, and I would surmise that this is what you set about doing.

=

You are familiar by this point with what it takes to make anything happen, and are acquainted with the miraculous nature of getting anything to go right. So I trust you will do your part and, with a visible star guiding your career for a change, you will row the boat in its direction.

=

Be realistic, and if you’re still on your feet and moving, count that as success in itself.

=

The effect of Jupiter is, for one thing, to help you retrace the steps you’ve taken toward where you are today. You need to know this history, for one thing, so you don’t repeat it. Jupiter is here to help you see what you’ve created, and to notice the respect that you’ve earned. Get over your shyness or false modesty if these things afflict you and claim the credit that is being handed to you.

=

The image is that you go all the way deep enough into your 12th house that you pop your head up in the future: as your future self. Then you track back through the deep, dark world of the 12th, practically forgetting what you learned in those 12 days of Venus in Pisces — until one day you remember; you have the feeling that you were already there. I suggest that you consecrate a notebook now and keep an excellent diary for those 12 days. Even if you think what you’re doing is entirely pedestrian, normal and ordinary, take notes. Remember what you did and in particular who you met those days.

=

The primary emotional and sexual relationship you will develop in 2009 is with yourself. And if you dive in and treat this like the creative adventure that it is, you not only will love the experience, it will bring you closer to yourself and to the people around you, the people you meet and your own creative process.

=

The most critical issue we face in our personal relationships is the lack of a confident relationship with ourselves. We do a lot of blaming and there is plenty to blame for; most of it comes back to insecurity and most of that insecurity relates to being unconscious about who we are, what we want and what we need. Your energetic relationship to religion does not help matters, because there is a layer of moralism imposed on nearly all of your thoughts. As that labyrinth gets chipped, worn, melted and blasted away by Pluto, something else will be freed. And with so much rather incredible action in your house of profession, you will want all the confidence you can get. As I see it, this will come from the only source from which it can possibly derive, which is a deepened relationship with yourself.

=

What I mean is, you will relate from your relationship to yourself first, and then your relationships to others will be secondary. You do this already, but you tend to do it defensively, somewhat resentfully and with an aura of it not being quite right. As Kurt Cobain said, “I love myself better than you / I know it’s wrong, but what can I do?”

=

You are now being given the opportunity to have it be right. And once you figure out that it is right, you will see why, and why it’s so messed up that most of the world attempts to have relationships with others without having a solid, dependable and most of all guilt-free relationship with oneself.

=

There is a spiritual dimension to the 12th in that it addresses all the intangibles we live with: dreams, secret desires, fantasies and the need, so dominant in your psyche, to submit to something larger and more powerful than you.

=

That something, in this case, is existence itself. It’s who you really are, not who you think you are. It is you, in all your uniqueness, in all your smallness in the universe, and the depth of the relationship you can have with yourself when you embrace both of these at once.

Small World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Taurus 2008

And not coincidentally, there are a lot of new experiences suddenly developing on the radar of your life, perhaps faster than you can track them. What is clear is that you’re ready for them.

=

Indeed, you would be wise to set your skepticism aside and live like you understand you are standing in the rare opportunity that it is. If your life has often felt like you had opportunities you were not ready for, or that you were ready for opportunities that were not available, raise a glass to the meeting place where preparation encounters the occasion for action.

=

The further you stray from such a documentable series of events in lieu of dancing around on the mental plane, the more likely you are to make your physical changes volcanically, in a way that you would normally consider against your nature. In other words, if you take action, your changes will be gentler. If you think, plan and plan of thinking, your world will pop like a zit every now and then, leaving you wondering what happened.

=

Either way, you will make unexpected progress; so make sure you plan for what you have not planned for. That’s another way of saying be flexible.

=

At the same time, you are expressing yourself in the world in new ways, but as you do so, you’re experiencing an external identity crisis that seems to dramatize what you’re going through inwardly. It’s an interesting dance.

=

The most significant difference is that real-time experiences exist in a dynamic world of different people, generally unpredictable, and all of whom — no matter what it may seem — are striving, struggling or in some way succeeding at finding their role in the drama of life.

=

To coexist with others in the dynamic world, you need to engage in a process of give and take, and a process of conscious, almost nonstop experimentation….To live in contact with others, it is necessary to be real, in the present, no matter how strange or uncomfortable it may feel at first.

=

But it is your success, whether you think you have it or not, that is the pheromone emitter, and by success I mean your connecting to an authentic purpose. It is also your sense of doubt that is so magnetic. You are working with more power than you yet recognize, and that vaguely clueless quality you possess is extremely attractive. At the same time the energy knocking at your inner door is saying, “OK, the time has come that you consciously feel me. I am you.”

=

I recognize that there is a vast portion of the Taurus psyche that is steadfastly committed to being steadfast; a good girl or a good boy; one who is known for their reserve, conserve, preserve and for getting only what they deserve, in fact, to the penny. There is also a stubborn quality, and unmovable force, that keeps the status quo painfully appealing to you.В  This is like the story of the bull contemplating the Moon: it allows you to dream about the dream, and by dreaming, it leaves the world behind.

=

The lust for expressive freedom is what is driving your lust for lust itself, and that passion wants to be set free — just like your ideas. This is the time to move, to allow your body to surrender to the inner force bursting out, to take action, and to boldly stop dreaming about it, and just do it.

=

In this picture, you are accustomed to people wanting to control you, to possess you, or people insisting on some traditional form of ‘commitment’. You respond in kind…. For that letting go of the need to be cocooned and nurtured is a necessary emotional step, as the ability to surrender your power to others comes from a deep needВ for security.

=

You allow yourself to be controlled in order to experience the creative release of stepping out from the grip others might have had on you.

=

Yet these experiences are not more important than relationship itself; art and work are about inner development and also about making contact with humanity, as you are offering your gifts…. Rather, the idea is to experience your creative process and your experiences of love and passion in a way that is mutually supportive.

=

This inner boundary has a starving quality to it, as if the fear of losing one part of you to the other has forced you to choose, one or the other — a false dilemma.

=

But your life is pushing you to be different and to stand out and I am happy to tell you that you have no choice in the matter.

=

There is still a ball of fire spinning in your house of surrender, orgasm and death — Sagittarius. The most visceral of these energies is curiosity. That arrives in the form of Pholus. One form this energy takes is curiosity that leads to unlikely places and ultimately unleashes a torrent of events, changes, developments and complete transformation.

=

The key thing will be discerning the difference between active and passive. I suggest you head straight for the dictionary and look up these words.

=

The whole issue with potential is that as we develop the power to create, we also create the power to destroy. Others who influence us profoundly gain some of the same power in our lives.

=

You are way too accustomed to addressing the mental block and then watching the world, hoping action takes you.

=

It’s said by herbalists that if you want a strong herb, grow it in soil that’s not quite right. The plant will compensate by becoming stronger, more potent and therefore more useful. This is you.

=

Taurus is the sign of the voice. Use yours, and remember that you are only as good as your word.

=

Good luck, ask questions and listen to the answers.

The Spiral Door — excerpts from annual horoscope for Taurus 2007
=
The metaphor I like to give comes from the book Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey, who describes Taurus, on the inside, as the blacksmith shop of the soul: a smoky place with a hot fire and molten metal, and the god Vulcan down there hammering away at his anvil.
=
Notably, Vulcan was the god rejected by Venus in favor of Mars, and therefore (looked at another way) represents something of the displaced or castaway aspect of the Taurus psyche; the part that exists beneath the level of appearances, perhaps forgotten, perhaps surfacing as shadow material, and perhaps as a quality of you deep beneath any appearances but urgently needing expression. We could ask which aspect of yourself you relate to when you relate to others; and which they perceive, regardless of which you choose to express.
=
I am going to hazard an educated guess that you have lately decided that resistance is not always a virtue; I trust you’ve observed that change usually brings improvement to your life.
=

Equally difficult has been having your idealism slowly stripped away, particularly about relationships, though it would be interesting to consider what has replaced it. Is it pragmatic values, or cynicism? Is it a sense of loss, or of opportunity?
=
In your solar chart (or the natal chart for those with Taurus rising), the 8th house — the dark, mysterious zone of deep encounters that rewrite the lines of our souls, and which reveals our true feelings about sex and death — concludes with the Galactic Core. Sagittarius comprises your 8th solar house; the Galactic Core is in the last degrees of Sagittarius, so planets transiting this house get there at the end of the transit. They must cross the core before they can get to the next house, the 9th, the house of spirituality, the higher self, and participation in the world.
=

This is because the core is a point that we could call our cosmic origins, our deepest inner truth, and the invisible beacon that points us home, indeed, that pulls us toward home with its gravity, light and love. It is way off the wavelength of most of the world, though the longing for it is exploited by many, including politics and religion. Astrology is full of little metaphors that help explain the world, and this is a fine one.
=
The core of our galaxy is perhaps the most vivid image of God that exists in astronomy, and the one thing we all have in common; our common source; our shared reality. And toward this, you are pulled all the time. Pluto is now focusing your mind, your growth and your soul’s passage precisely in the direction of home. It’s as if you’re being called to surrender to your cosmic origins, but with the knowledge that something about your worldly life will experience profound transformation as a result. In other words, you are not dying — you are being born.
=
Many people talk about the association of love and sex. Others talk about how God is love. How, then, does it become blasphemy to associate God with sex? We had better ask, because in worldly terms it is the essence of blasphemy — and for honest seekers, one of the most meaningful dimensions where healing occurs, and where we begin to allow life force, blood and feelings to flow back into our psyches numbed out by isolation, war and violence.
=
Pluto has come along like a blowtorch and fused these two seeming opposites, eroticism and divinity, into one thing, an entirely new thing, a unique new element in your soul.
=
The beauty of this is you know instinctually how good life can be when you live the whole natural truth of who you are: God, love, passion, sex, creation, service. The difficult thing is how often how few others can relate, and how many are satisfied by what amount to superficial exchanges and partial honesty, men and women alike.
=
Eighth house Pluto is a story about learning to be the equal to others; generally, this means learning how to stand up for yourself and not get taken along the road of other people’s power trips, and there are plenty. But I would propose a question here, which is that if you cannot share pleasure on equal terms with others, can you really be equal?
=
The image of the Spiral Door opening at the last edges of your 8th house is an image of taking what we might call your personal power and allowing that to go a step further, into a kind of cosmic union with yourself that opens up some significant opportunities to make the kind of contact that you have needed and wanted for a long time.
=
You have Aquarius in this house, the 10th. That alone, apart from any transits that may come through, is a placement that says you are here to make an ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTION (this is the only time I am using “all caps” in the entire horoscope section — 40,000 words, and just two of them are in all caps — the words “original” and “contribution,” and they are in direct reference to you and why you are on the planet).
=
Then all of a sudden, two Centaur planets showed up; not one but two: Chiron and Nessus. This was in early 2005, about two years ago, and that year was the time when, seemingly very quickly, your mind started to focus; your mission started to become clear.
=
You are likely to have noticed two things: ideals need to be acted on, and it’s not easy; and two, there is a dark side to what we are called upon to do, and that often involves acknowledging the world’s pain. In other words, we would not need healing if not for sickness; we would not need teachers if not for ignorance; we would not need inventors except for need itself. And indeed, you are being called upon to be all of those things — but with one focus; one mission. In reality, that is, in the physical world of people, organizations and society.
=
Centaurs do extremely weird things with the whole notion of “possible,” because the things that actually happen under Centaur transits are things we previously thought were impossible. Then one day they are necessary; and then the next day you’re actually doing them.
=
The resounding message, indeed, the compulsion, of Saturn in Leo has been to clean your life from the roots; to repair your foundations.
=
There must, with Saturn in the 4th house, be a connection between location and purpose.
=
For a long time, your relationships have had the feeling of power being brokered, distributed or somehow becoming an issue.
=
Venus retrograde is calling on you to get back to some of that fun aspect of relationships.
=
You may have noticed once or twice here and there that you try to think with your emotions. This is a little like driving a Ferrari into a lake. Cars are fun and lakes are fun, but — you need a boat for the lake and a car for the highway.
=
Indeed, if you think with your mind and feel with your feelings, there will be more to talk about, less to argue about, and all those cool things you like to think about, you’ll be able to share with others. How is that for a plan? You can even start right now.
