Next World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Virgo 2009

FIRST WE NEED to talk about freedom and why so many people think it’s dangerous. It is not merely that nearly everyone was conned out of their dreams and talents at a young age; or that we are shamed half to death, to the point where we cannot tell love from guilt until way after the fact; it’s that in a world of supposed “choice” we often take refuge in the absence of love rather than its presence. We think it’s safer not to be free, not to be embraced, and creating this becomes one of the central games of life.

=

Astrologers learn that for most of humanity, “the past is the present,” because we carry it around with us, often unconsciously, until it becomes so heavy that we finally have to lay it down.

=

Yet as you do so, remember that to step out of the past is to step into freedom, and that comes with its risks. One of those risks is that you may have no precedent for what you do next, except to accept that you are in a new place.

=

Yet it’s not like you’re entering this time in your life unprepared. The first thing you’ll notice when you actually update those files is that you have, over the past decade or so, established a foundation for yourself. The difficulty is discerning the difference between building on a foundation and living out a pattern based in the past. I think if you’re trying to discern the difference, think of it this way: spiritual and ethical concepts need to be simple and they need to make your life simpler, if not easier. They become the basis for choice.

=

Admittedly we live in a society where our childhoods are burdened with responsibility inappropriate for young people and where our adulthoods are aimed at perpetual adolescence. However, it would appear that 5th house Capricorn gives an extra large dose of adult responsibility to children, which is then carried into adult life as frustrating conservatism, propriety and fear of the unknown. Part of the issue is that children with this astrological signature take adult responsibility so seriously.

=

This makes creative process — essential to any life — difficult because there is psychic liberation involved in creativity; generally having to do things “wrong” in order to get them right; there is an experiment involved; you enter the unknown in order to get to a new place. Creativity is almost always driven by passion, and passion (at least at first) must exist independently of self-control.

=

It’s not going to happen all at once; Pluto transits never do.

=

From the outside, this process looks like a person seizing their destiny. In reality, one must be submissive to the creative process. You literally give yourself over; you give yourself; you let go. In our control-obsessed world, that’s not too popular. Notice that more people work in cubicles than in recording studios, painting studios or dance studios. We typically work away from sunlight, plants and one another.

=

And it’s how energizing embracing that inner source can be — and how wasteful avoiding it can be. Pluto here is all about liberating joy, freedom and vitality.

=

In essence you need to understand your obsession with the past, and you need to be aware of what facets of your past you are concealing from yourself.

=

Pluto is here to help you; to open up these dark spaces in your consciousness and help you make room to allow the frightened child inside you to come out and break out of those bindings. We are all dragging around too much baggage from childhood, and much of this adds up to what we call “ego.” It’s time to start letting that go. Enough ego; it’s time to be a Self.

=

We both know that this kind of process is not easy; and reclaiming yourself does not happen quickly. In truth, you must devote every expression of creativity, of love, of passion, of art, of exploration to this process of reclaiming.

=

And for the love of the Goddess, be aware when your parents — or any version of them — are lurking around when you want to express yourself sexually, artistically or as a parent with your own agenda.

=

With Saturn in your sign for the past year, it looks like you may have gone into a kind of reaction: retreating into conservatism or wishing you could join a convent. But that very retreat has led to a new series of confrontations, this time more direct. I suggest strongly that you listen to what people are saying, the more so if you don’t “agree” with it. What you are being told may not be exactly what you need to hear, but at the worst, it’s the first cousin.

=

What you may be noticing is that if you listen, you will hear, and if you hear, you will need to adjust. And while it may seem like you can put off the whole process, you are under the influence of outer planet transits. These are the transits that, depending on how you look at it, either change you, or help you become who you are.

=

Your charts are all about your creative process opening up, they are all about your sexuality, and they are all about your relationships — all at once. It’s not about one or another; this time in your life is about becoming a whole person.

=

I strongly suggest you investigate the role of guilt in your life, particularly as it manifests when you try to express yourself. Pluto in Capricorn through this house may at first magnify the pain that you have been experiencing. It may not be easy to let go of the thought forms that you think are either protecting you from running wild, or which may have barbs attached to them, encoded with the poisonous thought that you are betraying someone in authority by embracing your own need to live, love and grow.

=

The influence of families is largely invisible, until we finally see it for what it is. Part of what blinds us is, specifically, guilt. The fear that we will be punished for setting ourselves free is a relic of the past, and the truth is, a relic of some extremely disgusting aspects of human history.

=

In the true style of an artist, this must become your creative fuel. It’s like the Egyptians of the 19th century burning mummy rags in their steam trains: turning the remnants of their ancestors into fuel for progress.

=

Nature will take its course with you — you are well on the way. In terms of a conscious act of healing your inner child, I can tell you that the singele most meaningful thing you can do is make contact with him or her. Find that kid, or the diffrent versions of that kid, inside your awareness. It is true, there is probably more than one, for each major stage of growth that you went through, or at least for the ones that may have been more difficult. Start by saying hello. The rest will follow.

Small World Stories — excerpts from annual horoscope for Virgo 2008

AS ONE BORN under the sign Virgo, you are keenly aware of your limits, your faults and the mental patterns that seem to trap you. Is this a curse or a blessing? If you are vaguely self-aware, I am sure you ask this very question. It seems a blessing when you are guided to excel or to improve yourself sincerely, and when you use your sharp mental talent to improve yourself and the world. It is a curse when nothing you do is ever enough, or good enough.

=

Self-mastery and also mastering what is called the Saturn principle: the principle of inner authority.

=

Saturn is transiting your sign now, and its message to you is that you are your own boss.

=

Deep in your soul you know that your journey and at times your struggle is purely and plainly human. You know the Goddess does not plan her works in vain, and you know that you are one of her most devout servants. It is now time to live that with every bone, every cell and every lobe of your brain.

=

What would serve the Goddess? Indeed, you being free would. You living your life calling to the best of your talent and pleasure would. You accepting how much you are loved would be a huge plus. You understanding that you have a part to play in the great drama of life, and that it’s a part you are uniquely suited for.

=

Normally we find ourselves walking along the tightrope between birth and death, not knowing when we are going to fall off. But that is just one concept of time, and it’s the most limited there is. You need, at the least, to give yourself reasons to remember that time is on your side; it is an ally rather than an enemy. If you pause and think about it, you would come up with plenty of them.

=

Activity directly across the zodiac can represent one of several things: our environment, including people and their attitudes; what we project onto the world (that is, what we refuse to own or claim as our own); or parts of ourselves that we are dancing with, getting to know and integrating.

=

Uranus is the revolutionary of the zodiac, and you have indeed been dancing with him.

=

You have also learned that under all this pressure, rest and taking care of your needs is the only way to navigate it all.

=

Having so little to cling to, you’ve had to create something real for yourself, and find it within yourself. Confronted by so much originality, you’ve had to find the revolutionary or the artist within you; that is, the exuberant, energetic person that you are….In truth, you have had to solidify yourВ sense of existence.

=

People around you don’t necessarily see how much progress you make using your own style of movement, nor do they understand a life where the focus is predominantly interior. That being said, there is something perplexing and yet entirely necessary about the qualities of the people around you. Being exposed to it full-on may at times be disconcerting. You are, however, getting accustomed to it, and at times crave that high, fast vibration of others to get your brainwaves, your chakras and your clitoris spinning.

=

And it comes down to this. You grew up way before your time. You had responsibilities that no child should have had. You took this with you as an adult as an over-attachment to responsibility; a tendency to structure your creative tendencies and needs; and finally, a conservative approach to taking risks. This of course serves everyone around you well enough, but it’s come to the point where it no longer serves you so well.

=

You must be aware of your tendency to emphasize form and structure; to live and work within restrictive internal boundaries — the rules that you follow within your own psyche, seemingly of your own accord.

=

I think to handle this, you do need to let some part of your life go more than a little wild.

=

You are more erotic, creatively driven and prone to taking daring risks than you imagined, and those tendencies are going to bust loose any time now.

=

To the extent you are obsessed with service — and you usually are, but in recent years it’s been full-on — you also need to be an inventor.

=

I strongly suggest that you take on small leadership roles rather than large ones. For example, managing projects, being in a problem-solving role, or teaching a skill that you have in a small group setting. The key to maximizing your astrology is specifically about not watering yourself down with bureaucratic duties, but rather sticking close to the work you do well.

=

What I mean isВ facilitator; one who helps focus energy that helps rather than divides; one who is a locus of energy and information.

=

You are a vessel of whatever energy you choose to direct. I don’t suggest you advertise this fact; don’t throw away your resume or your dictionary. But work consciously with the fact that you need, more than anything, to be a clear channel of perception and energy, and you will create and achieve great things.

=

You are your own most important resource, and don’t forget it.

=

Think clearly, but present your ideas with confidence, and be prepared to argue for them — this may not have worked with your old boyfriend, but it will work in the world around you today cus this is now and that was them.

=

An inner and outer invisible protective armor that you have become so used to is falling down. You are ready to enjoy all you have been missing — including accepting your strength, your mission and your desirability. More than anything you are in a time of accepting your sense of presence in the world.

=

It’s as if you can finally drive the engine yourself, inviting others to the ride, because you now know how it works. For a long time you’ve felt like you were coming along for everyone else’s ride, sometimes reluctantly. As you make friends with yourself, with your mission and with your strength, you will discover in increasing degrees that you are someone worth traveling with, worth accepting as a leader and as a teacher and as an example for how to handle life on our very challenging planet.

The Spiral Door — excerpts from annual horoscope for Virgo 2007

As uncomfortable as it may be to question your logic, I suggest you do so. The reward will be the clarity of conscience that can only come from an honest reckoning with yourself, and the time is at hand. I suggest you celebrate this.
=
You live something of an inside-out, upside-down experience; the more selfish you may try to be, the more you are guided back toward your destiny of participation. The more you try to participate in the world, the more the cosmic forces seem to align and say: this is about you.
=
Alienation is one thing, but if that takes you beyond the sense of an existence that has meaning, you need to make adjustments, mainly to your philosophy of life: not somebody else’s philosophy, but as you have by now discovered, your own.
=
A 4th house Pluto transit, if lived unconsciously, can create a constant search for security that takes you many places, through many ideas, and many concepts of self and God. The thing is, as someone once wrote, seek and you shall find.
=

It would not be an exaggeration to say that isolation has at times been a difficult but productive teacher, pointing the way into yourself and helping you reach the core of your being. You have not quite arrived yet; the Spiral Door is located at the gateway between the 4th and 5th houses, where the sense of safety and grounding becomes the gift of expression, be it through some creative experience, the ability to live spontaneously, raising a family, or creating a business that helps support you and your community. If you have gained knowledge in these years, to borrow another expression, this time from the yoga path, “Action is the fruit of knowledge.”
=
And it would seem that every cell in your astrology and very likely your body wants you to take on some element of world karma and take on your role fully as a world server. There are an infinite number of possibilities, and the planet at our particular moment has karma to burn.
=
For most people, safety is about believing they are safe. Beliefs, however, are often little more than the mind tricking itself. They are a form of self-manipulation.
=
But that moment of discovery, where a belief evaporates like a drop of water, is rich.
=
There have been some interesting turning points here. One phase of your life to become intimately familiar with is late 1993 through late 1995. This was the era right before Pluto changed signs to Sagittarius, when Chiron came blazing through your sign.
=
This time frame is likely to have brought out something of your true nature, or precipitated a course of events that had the effect of putting you in contact with yourself, over time. If you are Virgo rising, then Chiron crosses your ascendant at this time, and the effect was potentially stronger than if it transited your Sun, though there are meaningful differences.
=
The ascendant is more closely related to your sense of existence, and is more subtle. Chiron in the ascendant can create an existential crisis that gets us to finally focus on who we really are as opposed to who everyone else said we are.
=
Bearing in mind that on the most superficial level, this was a search for safety, what proceeded was likely some form of a grand experiment in what makes you feel safe, how long it lasted, whether it was sincere, whether it was at the expense of others, and whether it cast you in the role of victim or leader.
=
To put it mildly, if Virgo is the sign of nurses, then it’s not of any ordinary ones; assuming you got yourself into a position where you could be consistently useful, you would be a Clara Barton (Capricorn Sun and Moon) or Florence Nightingale (Taurus Sun and Moon).
=
Both were pioneers, inventors and bold leaders, whose contributions we still benefit from today. While we’re on the subject, there are stories from both of their lives that are apropos of your moment. They both fall within the general category of grounding, and in particular, grounding one’s search for meaning — which is one way to sum up Pluto in Sagittarius in a sentence.
=
The necessity is for what Alejandro Jodorowsky calls “cleaning your tree,” that is, addressing the influences of your generational lineage, the past deeds of your ancestors, their refusal to deal with their psychological baggage — and what they dumped on you. This should be the subject of a book, not a horoscope, and fortunately plenty have been written. I suggest you start with A General Theory of Love. I don’t recommend books lightly, and I don’t recommend this one casually, either.
=
For you, real safety in the world has a lot to do with how you relate to others, particularly in the form of groups that are committed to service. The part of safety that has nothing to do with beliefs involves community. Part of why we feel so unsafe, threatened and voided out is because our sense of community is quickly being fried. Your sense of community, however, is being turned up, and I would start this brief discussion with the suggestion that you check in with the reality in your life of how you relate to groups of people.
=
Aquarius is your 6th house — the Virgo house for Virgo. In other words, the way you express your Virgoness to the world is not by being alone, but by experiencing, teaching and learning cooperation.
=
The dynamics of how you relate to a group involve rather directly the dynamics of your family of origin. Group involvement is also a place to outgrow the dynamics of your family of origin. The point, however, is not therapy. Therapy should be had in the therapy room, and to some extent, all of us in the Western world need it. The people you are meeting are people on a mission, and you are being invited to share in that mission, and even to create it as you go along. True, there is more to life than this — but here, we have a very good start.
